Almonds

Sometimes, all you need are some almonds to level up your diet.

Almonds are versatile, sweet, nutty, and earthy tree nuts that you can use for dishes, drinks, desserts, snacks, stews, and bread. From almonds alone, you can already make other products like flour, oil, and milk

To bring out the best in almonds, you can roast, bake, or blanch them, too. In fact, they also work well as a garnish for pastries for added texture. They’re not just versatile, but they’re healthy for you as well.

Almonds tend to make you feel full, delaying the feeling of hunger. Add them to smoothies and bread to keep you energized and full for the day.

Tips

Buying almonds

  • Real Simple suggests buying almonds sealed in packing.
  • You can also buy raw almonds and roast them.
  • Otherwise, buy roasted almonds and skip the roasting.
  • Ensure that they are not rancid.

Storing almonds

  • According to The Spruce Eats, you can keep raw almonds at room temperature for up to two years.
  • Roasted almonds have a shorter shelf life.
  • Seal them in plastic bags or jars

Roasting almonds

Why do you need to cook the almonds before turning them into butter? Baking or roasting the almonds helps release the oil faster when blending in the food processor. I usually roast them in the oven, but you can also try the following:

Pan-roasted
  1. Preheat a skillet over medium-low fire.
  2. Cook the almonds with occasional stirring.
  3. Once brown, remove them from heat.
Microwave
  1. Place the almonds in a microwave-safe dish
  2. Heat them at one-minute intervals until cooked.
Air fryer
  1. Spread the almonds in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  2. Cook them in a preheated air fryer at 180°Cf for 5 minutes.
  3. Shake the air fryer basket from time to time.

Almond Butter Variations

While Almond Butter is usually a one-ingredient recipe, there are other variations you can try out.

For instance, spiced roasted almonds can infuse the butter with flavors. If you want to make it sweet, then I suggest you add honey, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, or sugar.

You can also add avocado or almond oil to make it extra buttery. Sometimes, I also add some chocolate, desiccated coconut or coconut milk, cayenne pepper, and so much more.

Some even prefer to mix different kinds of nuts to get a whole new flavor. For instance, you can try it with cashews and peanuts. Make the butter extra healthy with seeds like pumpkin seeds and sunflowers seeds, too.

No-Food Processor Almond Butter

In case you don’t have access to a food processor, you can use a blender to turn the almonds into a paste. I suggest adding oil for easier blending. Alternatively, pound them with a mortar and pestle until you get the right texture.

  • Food processor: Make the almond butter in a food processor.
  • Oven: Bake them in the oven to roast.
  • Baking tray: Spread the almonds on a baking tray.
  • Spatula: Scrape down the almonds on the sides of the food processor.
  • Jar: Store the butter in a jar.
